Accessibility

It matters to us

DCAD’s Digital Learning Team is committed to providing a fully accessible website experience on browsers and mobile devices for all users. That includes people who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers, screen enlargement software, and alternative keyboard input devices to navigate the web.

Accessibility Features On Our Website

We try and design out inaccessibility. We check content on our website whilst it is being written (and afterwards) using the Equalize Digital Web Accessibility Checker opens a new window and act on the report.

We create content on this site using the new Gutenberg Blocks editor. This offers greater accessibility than the older WordPress editor. A list of known issues with the Gutenberg editor opens a new window is published on Github and we check it every month.

The following is a list of items we have included in our website to improve its accessibility:

  • Simplified summaries are added to the foot of pages that have a reading score above 9th grade (year 10 of school in England, S3 in Scotland).
  • We actively avoid using tables.
  • We have deployed the One Click Accessibility toolbar opens a new window that allows readers like you to make changes to the appearance of the content. These persist for 12 hours.

Where We’re Improving

In our efforts to bring our website up to standard, we are targeting the following areas:

  • The past issue with the FAQ tool was resolved on the 21 December.

This is part of our broader effort to make everyone’s experience a welcoming and enjoyable one. Please note that while we make every effort to provide information accessible for all users, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of third party websites to which we may link.
