Concessions: Accommodations, Exceptions and Exemptions

Students may have concessions for a variety of reasons. Some students will be allocated extra time for all exams or extensions for due dates on all assignments. Other students may request a single extension for a specific assessment, a one-off concession. These concessions can be stored in Blackboard and are known as accommodations.

Accommodations

An accommodation is applied to a student to allow extra exam time or give extensions to assignment deadlines. Accommodations are automatically applied to all assignments and tests. These are usually triggered by an assessment by the Disability Support Team and will be supported by a report outlining these accommodations recommended for the student.

To set accommodations:

Go to the Class Register and click on the 3 dots (ellipses) next to the student’s name and select Accommodations.

If there is to be a Due Date Accommodation, tick the relevant box which says Work will never be marked late, this will apply to all group members for a group assignment.

If there is to be a Time Limited Accommodation for extra time in timed assessments or exams, and then enter a % for extra time in the box below.

Click Save.

A purple flag will appear next to the student’s name to indicate that there is an accommodation and the accommodations added will appear under the accommodation column on the student row.

Exceptions

An exception can be allocated to one particular student for one particular assignment, e.g. if the student is sick, an extension can be granted, or multiple attempts at a test can be granted.

To add an exception:

Ensure you have set the Conditional Availability for the assessment and entered the relevant dates. Navigate to the relevant assessment in Gradebook. Click on the 3 dots (ellipses) next to the student name and select Add or Edit Exceptions.

Exemptions

An exemption from marking can be applied to an assessment for a student. This is done when a student is not expected to complete an assessment.

To create an exemption:

Either in the gradebook submission list view or the student detail view, click the 3 dots and select Add or Edit Exemptions.

Tick the Exempt from Marking box and click Save.

The word Exempt should appear next to the mark lozenge on the student’s row in the gradebook.

When exempting an item, the item will not be:

  • included in the overall grade calculation,
  • marked late for students who do not make a submission, or
  • assigned an automatic zero.

Students can still supply submissions for exempted items. Staff can grade and provide feedback for these submissions.
