Grading Group Assignments

Ways of Marking

There are 2 scenarios for marking.

All students will receive the same mark. In these instances, for example if this is a collaborative report, one member of the group will submit the assignment a single grade will be allocated to the group.

Students will receive a different mark from a single submission. If there is an individual component as well as a group output then the grades may need to be tailored to the individual. For example if the report submission will be given a grade, but the individual contributions to the project are also to be given a grade then each student may have a different grade. The simplest way to manage this is to set two assignments, one for the group submission and mark and one for the individual component however it is possible to override marks to ensure each person has a personalised mark.

Marking and Allocating a Single Mark

Locate the assignment in the gradebook, note that in the example below the accommodations flag is visible next to the group name. This indicates that at least one student has an accommodation. This means that no group member will be penalised for a late submission if the student with an accommodate has a due date extension.

Below the group name a link to the group members is displayed. To see the students in this group, click on this link. The students will be displayed below. You can now see which students have accommodations and which student submitted the group assignment.

To begin marking the work, click on the group name. This will open the marking window. Comments and grades can be added in the same way as for individual assignments. Note that these comments go in the Group section. All members of the group will see this feedback for the report component of the assignment. It is important to Save this feedback before going on to mark the individual component of the assignment.

If using rubric, this can now be accessed in a pop-out rubric window when reviewing a submission.

  • Bulk performance level selection: Apply a level across all criteria with one click.
  • Cell syncing: Selected cells update the grade pill automatically.
  • Focused feedback entry: Selecting a cell moves focus to the feedback textbox.
  • Navigation warning: Alerts instructors if they try to leave with unsaved changes.
  • Override warning: Shows a banner if the grade was overridden and disables rubric editing.
  • Printing: Instructors can print blank or completed rubrics using the browser’s print function.

When the pop-out rubric is open, the ability to add Overall Feedback and grade with the rubric in the main grading interface is inactive. This prevents an instructor from editing the same information in two separate places simultaneously.

Continue by clicking on the Individual tab and then provide some personalised feedback for the individual student. You can also embed an audio/video recording of your feedback in the editor as you grade group submissions by clicking on the video icon. When you have finished the feedback, click Save.

You can navigate between the different group submissions using the Next and Previous buttons on the header bar.

You can post the marks by clicking on the ellipses next to the mark lozenge. Here you can add and edit exceptions (one-off extensions) as well as Post the marks.

Post Grades

Once the grades are posted, these can be seen in the Submissions section of the Gradebook. In the example below, each student has been given 50/100.

Marking and Allocating a Personalised Mark

By default, all group members receive the same grade for a group assignment. However, you can change individual group members’ grades if you feel their contributions earned grades different from the group.

On the Submissions page, you can assign a grade for the whole group. Type a value in the Grade column. The grade is labeled as Override because you didn’t assign the grade from the actual submission (see image above).

To assign a different grade to an individual member, expand the group list and enter a value in that member’s Grade column. The overall group’s grade is shown as In Progress and the  Post option doesn’t appear because some students don’t have grades for the assignment.

After you assign a grade to the overall group, you can edit a group member’s individual grade. Expand the list of group members and change an individual grade as needed. The overall group’s grade appears as Multiple. The individual member’s grade is labelled as Override.

You can also assign different grades in the gradebook grid view. Select a group member’s cell and all other group members are highlighted in the grid. Edit a group member’s grade as needed. You have the option to apply this edited grade to everyone in the group.

Look out for future upgrades which include pop-out rubric and per question feedback which is currently available in individual assignment marking.

Marking Group Tests – Display per question feedback to students on group test submissions

Students can now view per-question feedback on group test submissions. Instructors have been able to provide per-question feedback, but it was not visible to students until now.

With this update:

  • Students reviewing a graded group test can see feedback for each question.
  • Feedback supports all formats: text, file attachments, and video recordings.
  • Per-question feedback appears alongside overall feedback and rubric scores.

This enhancement ensures that group submissions benefit from the same detailed feedback experience as individual submissions. It also supports:

  • Originality reports (when enabled via Turnitin).
  • Attempt-level score overrides for individual group members.
  • AI Rewrite for both overall and per question feedback.
  • Navigation between group submissions using Previous/Next controls.
