Creating the Gradescope Course
If you’ve never used Gradescope before, you will first need to create a new Course via Blackboard.
- In your chosen Blackboard Course, select the plus icon ⊕ where you’d like the link to Gradescope to be placed, then Content Market. Find the Gradescope tile, then select the small plus icon ➕ towards the bottom right.
- You will now be returned to the Course Content area of Blackboard where you will see a new link to Gradescope.
- Note this link to Gradescope is hidden from students by default. Remember to make it Visible to students. This can be done now, or once you’ve setup your assignments.
- Next, select the Gradescope item that has appeared in your Course, which will open the tool in a new tab. When you enter Gradescope for the first time, you will need to create the Gradescope course that your Blackboard Course will link to.
- Note: You must have an Instructor or Teaching Assistant role on the module in order to create the course.
- You will be presented with a window asking you to link Gradescope to Blackboard. Select A new Gradescope Course and then Link Course.
- On the next page, scroll to the bottom and choose the Update Course button at the bottom. This will add the course to your Gradescope Dashboard. Students are automatically added to the Gradescope roster once they select a Gradescope assignment link in Blackboard. It is recommended that you resync the roster shortly before assessments are due, just to ensure all students have access.

Syncing the Blackboard Roster
Syncing the roster means ensuring the list of staff and students in your Gradescope Dashboard matches those in the Blackboard Class Register. Note that Gradescope only recognises the roles of Instructor, Teaching Assistant, and Student. If you use any other role e.g. Marker, this won’t sync to Gradescope.
- In Gradescope, choose Roster from the left sidebar menu.
- Next, select the Sync Blackboard Roster button at the bottom of the screen.
- You will then be presented with a popup window that will allow you to review what actions will be taken.
- Please uncheck the ‘Let new users know that they were added to the course’ option. If you leave this checked, it will send an email to all students suggesting they need to create an account at www.gradescope.com. This is not the case, as access is provided via Blackboard.
- Once you’ve unchecked the email notification option, you can choose Sync Roster.
Course setup is now complete. When you’re ready, you can start creating an assignment.

Turn off regrade requests
In Gradescope, students have the ability to make a request for their assignments are regraded. It’s important to point out that regrade requests are turned on by default. To turn this setting off:
- Go to Gradescope assignment, then click on the Regrade Requests item in the assignment menu.
- Click Regrade Request Settings.
- Then untick the option to Enable regrade requests and choose Save (see image 4).
The assignment is now setup and you can close it.
