Numbas is a free and open source system for creating online tests. It’s aimed at mathematical subjects, but it’s capable of a lot more.
A Numbas test runs entirely in the student’s web browser so there’s no need to install anything. You can ask students to enter a number, text, or even a mathematical expression.
And of course, a whole variety of multiple choice question types are supported. Questions can be fully randomised. Maths, text, and even diagrams can be generated afresh each time the question is run. Students get instant feedback on their answers, including a worked solution.
Because Numbas tests run in the browser, it’s really easy to include images, interactive graphics and even videos in your questions. Accessing a test is as easy as clicking on a link.
If you need to keep track of students’ scores, Numbas integrates with VLEs such as Moodle and Blackboard.
Our public database contains thousands of readymade questions, and an easy-to-use editor to create your own.
More advanced users can change the look of their tests with fully customisable themes or add functionality with extensions.
