Test: Question Bank

Question banks contain a number of test questions which can be reused across multiple assessments. Question banks can be created from scratch or they can be created by importing questions.

Creating Question Banks

To create a question bank with your own questions:

  1. Open the relevant course.
  2. Click on the Manage bank link under the Question Banks option on the Details & Actions menu on the right-hand side.
  3. The Question Banks management page will open.

When adding for the first time, you will notice that there is a blank space, click the purple cross to start adding your own questions. See our other help pages for more on the creating test questions and question types. Questions can also be auto-generated using the AI design assistant.

Clicking the plus sign will show the menu which includes Auto-generated questions and all available question types below.

Uploading Questions

Questions which are held in a file (such as a CSV file) or QTI 2.1 zip package can also be uploaded to the question banks repository. To upload a file or QTI 2.1 package:

  1. Click on the purple + sign to add a new question bank.
  2. Select either Import from File or Import from QTI 2.1 Package. Both will open the browse window.
  3. Browse to locate the file and then click Open.
  4. Files will be imported. If there is a problem with a question, a message will appear on the screen.
  5. Questions will then appear in your list.

Note that at this time not all question types are supported. Questions that are supported include:

  • Calculated Formula
  • Calculated numeric
  • Essay
  • Fill in the Blank
  • Fill in Multiple Blanks
  • Hot Spot
  • Likert
  • Matching
  • Multiple Choice
  • Multiple Answer
  • True/False

Unsupported question types will be removed.

QTI 2.1 files can now be exported from Blackboard courses so they can be used in other systems which use QTI 2.1 files.
